5/12/2023 0 Comments Alison bechdel to the lighthouse![]() With this book, I’ve tried to come back out into the world.” “Queerness brought me into my body therapy brought me into my feelings. “I was very trained to be completely stuck in my head,” she says from her studio in Vermont. Her partner, Holly Rae Taylor, did the coloring work, which meant Bechdel needed to relinquish some measure of control - a theme throughout her work and her life. A direct reference to the Elvis Costello song, this story effortlessly weaves richly poignant characterization with meditations of broader philosophical import, resulting in an effect which recalls the dark surrealism of Thomas' earlier piece, "Ghosts in Amber" (available in 'The Endless Fall and other Weird Fictions'). If you have enjoyed the dark seductions of "Carrion" and "The Left-Hand Pool" from his 'Haunted Worlds' collection, you will appreciate this thematically similar story. The uneasy eroticism of the opening tale, though predictable in its unfolding, benefits from vividly emotional flashbacks and memorably perverse descriptions of a sex-doll factory. Of the many chapbooks recently released by Jeffrey Thomas, this one probably is the most psychologically oriented. ![]() ![]() ![]() And that has not changed for years, even with the very obvious fluctuation in interactions in the years that followed as 1D continued to rise to fame higher than anyone could have predicted. ![]() As a disclaimer I’m just gonna put it out there that I have been IN LOVE WITH LARRY STYLINSON since the X-Factor days, but I never saw them as being more than friends. And I’m not here today to define, defend or dictate any part of that. Now, this whole Larry debacle could easily be a post (or 2 or 200) on its own. Basically it is the whole idea that these two boys are actually simply in love with each other. Ranging from the terrifying to the comedic, from the erotic to the loathsome, these stories showcase Junji Itos long-awaited return to the world of horror. ![]() Talk about a huge markup, but what do you expect, that's Australia's products in a nutshell - heavy inflated prices and sometimes it's still cheaper to purchase from overseas than purchasing in a physical store (can you believe that?). Fragments of Horror A new collection of delightfully macabre tales from a master of horror manga. Now I look at the BookDepository store, it's selling at $20 AUD. I actually purchased this book around October last year for about $15 AUD, and I didn't get around reading it until recently in physical form (I have read the online scanlated version multiple times too). ![]() Some mangas are just too focused on horror and it sometimes results in a weak story Junji Ito however is the contrary. ![]() For me, it's the right balance between horror value and readability. What is even more interesting is that Batman would not be who he is today if not for the Frank Miller of the mid 1980’s. When this did not happen I felt a little disappointed, however I soon realized that while it was not the same and perhaps not as revolutionary, it was still well done and an important Batman book.īatman as a character would not be who he is today if it were not for Frank Miller. At first, I was excited to get that same feeling I got when I first read The Dark Knight Returns. Several years later, Miller’s sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again came out. This piece of art showed me that there was more to comics, and that they could be just as literary as any novel. Then one day I picked up the trade paperback of The Dark Knight Returns and forever I was changed, as are many people when they read Frank Miller’s dark tale of an elderly, nearly broken Batman. It was just over ten years ago and I had recently come back to comics about a year earlier and had returned to what I knew, namely superhero comics. ![]() ![]() This is the graphic novel that paved the way for me (and many other comic book fans) to enter the world of more mature and intelligent comic books. ![]() |
