A direct reference to the Elvis Costello song, this story effortlessly weaves richly poignant characterization with meditations of broader philosophical import, resulting in an effect which recalls the dark surrealism of Thomas' earlier piece, "Ghosts in Amber" (available in 'The Endless Fall and other Weird Fictions'). If you have enjoyed the dark seductions of "Carrion" and "The Left-Hand Pool" from his 'Haunted Worlds' collection, you will appreciate this thematically similar story. The uneasy eroticism of the opening tale, though predictable in its unfolding, benefits from vividly emotional flashbacks and memorably perverse descriptions of a sex-doll factory. Of the many chapbooks recently released by Jeffrey Thomas, this one probably is the most psychologically oriented. ![]()
